Sussex Rides

'There's nothing like it...My horse and I had a great time' - Angela Jones

SussexThe network is roughly a rectangle with Midhurst at its centre. The countryside is varied, ranging from chalk downs around the South Downs Way, which crosses the south of the network area, to sandy heaths and woods along the Rother Valley and Blackdown Hill on the Surrey border in the north. The rides take you up onto the South Downs, past Goodwood racecourse (although not on race days) and through time-warp villages with houses built of flint and thatch.

There are some steep climbs on and off the downs to the north and south, but the bulk of the riding is over undulating terrain. Although our routes avoid most of the hard, flinty parts of the South Downs Way, there are still a few stony tracks.

This network offers one-centre holidays near Chichester, Petworth, Waldeerton, and South Harting, with a choice of 'petal rides', and there are some options for 'place-to-place' rides, including riding on the downs.

This area is good for mountain biking, although there are one or two steep climbs from the Rother Valley up onto the Downs.

SussexThis ride from South Harting to Houghton takes you through downland farms and valleys, crossing the South Downs, which are interspersed with ancient beechwoods and have fantastic views to both the north and the south. It takes in various pretty and historic villages along the South Downs Way, as well as Bignor Roman Villa, one of the best preserved villas in Britain.

SussexA basic ride of 23.25 miles with two pub stops, or if you prefer, this can be reduced by 3 miles by joining the South Downs Way at Didling Hill. A chance for a decent canter is on offer if you chose to make the ¾ mile diversion to the second pub after the first 12 miles.
